The Common Gallinule

Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata)

Family to Rails, Gallinules and Coots.

Active and colorful are great descriptions for the Common Guillinule. It is a noticeable and attractive bird.

The Common Gallinule has other names:

  • Moorhen
  • American Moorhen
  • Laughing Moorhen
  • Common Moorhen
  • Florida Gallinule
  • Black Gallinule

They are never far from water, swimming and picking at the water surface. Also seen walking near aquatic vegetation.

You might find them on fresh marshes, reedy ponds or even slow moving waters. They seem to favor the cover that marsh and wetlands provide.

The immature (younger) Common Gallinule are a paler gray. The bill and legs are dull. Like the adults their body displays white stripes.

The Common Gallinule is never still. They have a distinctive behaviour. Always busy, foraging and poking about as if to meet a looming deadline.
